The Morality Vote

I've been hearing a lot about the importance of the "morality vote" in re-electing George W. Bush. Well I refuse to cede the term morality to the Christian Right — a group of people who insist on the infinite mercy of their god and somehow reconcile that notion with the childish tyrant described in their "inerrant" Bible. Take a look at the Bible. You don't need to go far to see what I mean:

And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.

Joshua 6:21-24

These verses have some personal significance to me. These vile verses were the basis of the sermon at my daughter's baptism service, and this may have been the beginning of the end of my search for faith. There's more:

And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

Joshua 7:24-26

Not to be outdone, the Lord himself got in on the slaughter:

And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

Joshua 10:10-11

It's hard to know where to stop! The book of Joshua is filled with smiting, stoning, burning, and otherwise killing the enemies of Israel. Why? It was as God commanded:

So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.

Joshua 10:40

You must have stopped reading by the time god was killing hordes of children with bears because they had the audacity to call an old man "bald" in Kings 2. I think that was the turning point for me.

Yes, that's a nice one, Aaron.

"And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head."

"And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them."

Nice touch, Lord! I wonder if the pro-life movement would have protested this.
